Cr
yptosporidiosis “Crypto” Information related to Swimming Pools
As many residents are aware, there have been reports of persons in the Dallas/Fort Worth area who have become infected with the Cryptosporidiosis (“Crypto”) virus as a result of swimming in public pools or water areas.Cryptosporidiosis (“Crypto”) can be contracted by swallowing contaminated water or food, and typically causes watery diarrhea and abdominal cramping. Since the parasite may be shed in stool even after resolution of illness, facilities should consider posting signs to remind persons with recent diarrhea to refrain from swimming for at least 2 weeks after diarrhea resolves. We have no reason to believe that your community pool has been infected
with the “Crypto” virus. We have not been contacted by any City or Health Department Official advising that your community pool has been infected with this virus, or that any immediate action is required to treat the pool for the Crypto virus. If we would become aware that your pool had the Crypto virus present, we would take immediate actions to close the pool and take any precautionary measures recommended by such City or Health OfficialAny person(s) who are concerned about swimming in a public/community pool at this time as a result of the information being publicized should refrain from swimming until such time as they believe there is no risk of contracting the Crypto virus. Here are some helpful tips to keep your community or personal pool safe:Please do not swim when you have diarrhea. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick
Please don’t swallow the pool water. In fact, avoid getting water in your mouth
Please practice good hygiene. Take a shower before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers
Please take your kids on frequent bathroom breaks or check diapers often
Please change diapers in a bathroom or a diaper-changing area and not at poolside. Germs can spread to surfaces and objects in and around the pool and cause illness
Please wash your child thoroughly (especially their rear end) with soap and water before swimming. Everyone has invisible amounts of fecal matter on their bottoms that ends up in the pool!!!
